Giving Campaign 2022
Reading can rewrite the future. Do it now.
The program is a servant leadership incubator for the college students and recent graduates who are interested in serving and making a difference. Training, coordinated by the CDF Freedom Schools national office, prepares the young adults to provide an enriching experience for the children they serve. The Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute promotes principles of servant leadership by fostering an understanding of the connection between effective programs and public policy, and the importance of community development, political advocacy, and coalition building. The strong ethic of service is evident across generations, as community leaders support these servant leaders while they teach and mentor the younger children.

Testimonials
I wanted to thank you again for affording the children of my family (my dad's grands), and the
community, another opportunity to participate in the Freedom School Program. As always, our children
had an enriching summer experience, full of fun and learning. The daily affirmations are recited by them
all, far beyond the summer months. They were all excited about returning to school - the oldest as a
sophomore at the Charter School of Wilmington. The next as a freshman in high school at St. Elizabeth,
and the twins are entering third grade.
A Letter From One of Our Parents
The ACLU along with a team of other social justice organizations conducted teen focus groups to look at
student discipline, how inequality in discipline contributes to the cradle to prison pipeline and how
discipline can be done in better and more equitable ways. The High School scholars in the Freedom
School participated in one of these groups. The adult leaders of the focus group were very impressed
with the Freedom School scholars say they were very engaged, had great ideas for change and were the
only ones that already knew what the cradle to prison pipeline is.

After attending the 2018 Freedom School, the parents of one the high school scholars reported that
their daughter was more confident and began participating in the Black Achievers Program at the YMCA.
Because of her enthusiastic work in this program the YMCA selected her to represent them at their
conference in London, England in August of 2019 (with most of the cost paid for by the YMCA). Before
she left for the conference she was able to share some of her experiences with her fellow scholars and
they were able to share her excitement as she left for London at the end of the 2019 Freedom School.

I want to also thank you and all the other SLI instructors and staff for showing up each day and positively
impacting the lives of our children, especially minorities. I'm so happy that Nylah and I were blessed
enough to become a part of a community outreach program that has so much interest in education and
has so much compassion for our community. I truly hope you all are aware of just how important you
are to our kids and to this program. I'm happy that the PSFLF CDF Freedom School program and
program Director, Mrs. Livingston decided to keep pushing positive energy, light, and education to keep
the program going despite the pandemic and all the racial injustices happening around the world. Thank
you for all that you do!!! You are greatly appreciated.
Letters & Messages from our parents:
I would like to thank you and the staff of Freedom School for offering, implementing, and allowing
Logan to be part of the program this summer. I truly believe it was a valuable experience for him and
the other participants. Even though it had to be done virtually, your staff made it engaging and fun. It
also prepared him for completing school virtually. Logan continues to say he would like to be an SLI one
day. He and I both see the SLIs as positive role models who I can say definitely influence the scholars.
Please know that I appreciate the work that was put into making the program work this summer, and we
look forward to being able to participate in the future.
Letters & Messages from our parents:
We will definitely talk about saving for an education and discuss banking when we deposit the
scholarship check at the bank. It will be a wonderful surprise for him as he likes to receive mail. Once
again, thanks everything.

On behalf of the Huggins family, we thank you for the scholarship for Raphael which will go directly to
his 529 college savings fund and the valuable lessons he gained this summer. It is so important for him,
especially in light of what is going on in the country at this time. I look forward to hearing more of what
Freedom School will be doing in the future.
Letters & Messages from our parents:

Thank you for letting me know. I really appreciated the program especially when now the children have
remote learning and it helped prepare them for it. She will definitely be a participant next year.
Letters & Messages from our parents:
Our child really enjoyed freedom school this year and I feel you all did an awesome job in the virtual
environment. She has a savings account which was started with the incentives and was very pleased to
see that she’ll be able to add to that.
